3 Photo Pointers for Capturing the Moment
The best photos are usually the ones that don’t look staged. Sometimes you’ve got to nudge the moment, let’s face it, not every moment in life is photo-worthy. But once you’ve got your Kodak moment underway you definitely don’t want all of your photos documenting it to look contrived.
I took advantage of a time such as this when Bean and my husband were playing with her new Bunchems to show how to capture the moment authentically. Chances are you’ve already heard of these colorful little balls. They’re easy to connect, twist, and create. Bean makes the cutest creations with them all by herself! She used to get frustrated with other toys that connect, but these are so easy for her to play with and then pull apart and build another crazy creature. Plus, they clean up super easy, which I appreciate.

Get the Details
Shot after shot taken from your vantage point gets old real fast. Get down into it and shoot some close ups of what’s going on. You’d be surprised how interesting a relatively boring detail can look when taken close up.
Watch Your Angles
Speaking of your vantage point, an easy trap to fall into when you’re a beginner photographer is to simply take the photo from where you’re standing. Photos look far more interesting and appealing when shot head on or even from directly above (if you can manage that). Whenever I’m taking photos of Bean I am always crouching and getting into crazy positions.
Consider the Background
Could the background give some perspective about the day/time the photo was taken? In this case, it’s the holiday season and I wanted to show the warm family feel that comes along with the holidays. Instead of showing off our Bunchems creations lying on the carpet, or up against a random wall, I put them on our ottoman so that you could see our Christmas tree in the background.
By following those three basic tips, you can make sure to capture the moment and really tell a story through your photos. And remember, practice makes perfect. The more photos you take, the better your photography will get.
