How I Made Over $100 in ONE Kid’s Consignment Sale

As you might already know, Bean is the first and was the only (up until a few months ago) grandchild in the family on both sides. To say she has been spoiled is probably an understatement. That kid has owned more clothes in the last 4 years than I have in 30. After having to pack up all our belongings and move this past winter, I knew once we were settled that a consignment sale was in order.
I did my research and found a local kids and baby consignment sale that was a few weeks out, which gave me plenty of time to prep the clothes. I must have done a pretty good job because all but one piece was accepted to the sale (it had a TINY hole that I missed in my inspecting) and at the end of it all a check for over $100 showed up in my mailbox. Just from selling Bean’s old clothes!

How to Prep Kid’s Clothes for a Consignment Sale
You’ll need…
- Clothes free of rips, holes, major stains
- all® Fresh Clean Essentials™ Fresh Scent or Fragrance Free
- Hangers (check the rules of your sale, mine required plastic kid’s hangers)
- Safety Pins
- White Card Stock
STEP ONE | Inspect your clothes for any lingering stains, smells, etc. I discovered through this process that what were once clean baby clothes were suddenly stained by phantom formula spills/spit ups during storage.Â
STEP TWO | Pre-treat any stained clothes by rubbing a small amount of all® Fresh Clean Essentials™ directly on the stain. Kids will be kids, the stains were a plenty, but this worked really well at getting rid of them.
STEP THREE | Because I was washing in extra large loads and trying to rid the clothes of any remaining stains I filled the pre-measured cup to just below line 5 with my all® Fresh Clean Essentials™. Follow the directions on the package for use in your situation. all® Essentials™ is a new product that I purchased through Amazon. It cleaned very powerfully without being harsh on her clothes.
STEP FOUR | Dry the clothes in the dryer. Once they’re dry, pull them out and immediately hang them so that they don’t wrinkle. If there are pieces that need ironing to hang flat and look presentable, run an iron over them.
STEP FIVE | As a general rule, and so that your clothes are more likely to sell, bundle anything that isn’t worth at least $3 on it’s own. Almost every piece that I hung was a set or bundle. The only things that I didn’t bundle were Halo Sleep Sacks, “New With Tag” items, and designer brand items. Use clothing pins to keep them together and on the hanger neatly. Shoppers tear through the clothing racks at these sales and anything that falls on the floor off the hanger doesn’t get sold.Â
STEP SIX | My sale had an easy to use platform to type up and print out tags. I entered my descriptions and printed the tags out on white card stock. To be safe, I placed a piece of transparent tape where the safety pin would go for attaching it to the clothes.Â
STEP SEVEN | Keep the clothes hanging until you’re ready to bring them to the sale. Presentation is KEY. Think about it, are you more likely to buy something that’s wrinkled or perfectly pressed and hanging nicely?
All in all, I think my first consignment sale was very successful. I have plans to do another one for the next change of seasons. I made over a hundred dollars in one sale, and all I was selling was clothes!
