Summer DIY “Don’t Spill the Bucket” Game [TUTORIAL]

If you have been to a water park or splash pad, chances are you have seen those over-sized buckets that gradually fill up with water and then spill over on top of giddily screaming children below. Something about the uncertainty of not knowing when and where the deluge of refreshing water was going to fall makes kids giggle with excitement. OK, maybe I kind of get that way too.

After a brainstorming session with my also crafty Mom, we decided to combine a favorite childhood game of mine (Don’t Spill the Beans) with the concept of the spilling bucket, and create a fun “beat the summer heat” game that the whole family can get into. We can’t wait to bring it up north to the cabin with us for the upcoming 4th of July weekend! Here is how you can make your own “Don’t Spill the Bucket” game:

Don’t Spill the Bucket Game Supplies:

• homemade die with numbers 1-4
• small cup
• clothesline rope (I bought mine at a local hardware store for just a couple bucks)
• medium sized bucket (again, bought at a local hardware store for about 99 cents)
• a raised bar/swing set for hanging your bucket
• a chair/swing for sitting beneath the bucket
• Not pictured: larger bucket filled with water for filling your cup
• don’t forget the Banana Boat Clear Ultramist Dry Oil Spray Sunscreen with Argan Oil! (the only oil sunscreen that doesn’t make me feel like a greased hog)

I made our dice out of a small gift box that I glued shut and attached laminated numbers on each side. I knew water would be at play so I wanted to make sure that my dice was water-proof. You could just use a regular dice, but I felt that in order for the game to be more “suspenseful”, I wanted to lower the numbers involved. It’ll all make sense below 🙂

Before any outdoor activities begin, we always start with sunscreen. My favorite sunscreen this summer is the Banana Boat Dry Oil Clear Ultramist Sunscreen with Argan Oil. Most oil sunscreens leave me feeling slippery, this stuff leaves me feeling silky-smooth, moisturized, and non-greasy. It is honestly my new favorite!

Make sure the handle of the bucket is off-center so that it tips easily. We created new holes in our cheap bucket so that it tipped forward when it was empty. Attach your bucket with securely tied knots to a raised bar or, in our case, a swing set. Make sure you have a chair (or a swing) directly below the bucket. 

“Don’t Spill the Bucket” Game Rules:

Youngest player goes first, they will be known as the “roller”. They roll the dice and then take a seat beneath the bucket. The next youngest (who will next be the “roller”) will now be the “filler”. 

The “filler” will now dump the amount of cups of water that the “roller” ended up with on the dice into the bucket. Bean rolled a 2, so she’s pretty sure the bucket won’t spill out on her. Technically I should have been the “filler”, but for the sake of picture taking I had my husband stand in my place. 

Since I was the “filler” in the last round, it’s my turn to be the “roller”. I rolled the dice and came up with a 2. Despite the fact that the bucket was barely full, I had a feeling that it would tip on me, hence the face. Luckily, I was in the clear! My husband should have been the “filler” but he wanted to give Bean the chance to potentially dump a bucket of water on her Mommy.

Now it was my husband’s turn to be the “roller”. Bean should have been the “filler”, but hey I hadn’t had my turn yet. You could really do the “filler” role however you like as long as everyone gets a turn. Just make sure you rotate through the “roller” position equally. As you can see, his roll finally made the bucket tip! Depending on how small the bucket is and how big the cup is, you might have more or less rounds before you “spill the bucket”.
