Father’s Day Gift: DIY Copper Stone Tie Rack

Dads are THE HARDEST people to buy for, I swear. Especially Dads who go out and buy for themselves the gift you were banking on getting for them the week of their birthday. I was having the same troubles trying to figure out what to do for my husband for this coming Father’s Day.
And then I went into my husbands closet and found IT. His “tie rack”. Except it wasn’t a tie rack, it was a plastic pant hanger from a clothing store with ties sadly draped over it.
It was then that I knew exactly what sort of useful Father’s Day gift to make.
Easy DIY Copper Stone Tie Rack
You’ll need…
- Scotch® Brand Permanent Mounting Tape
- Command™ Strips
- Stones with flat backs, large enough for hanging
- Flat wood piece
- Copper spray paint
- Spray paint in desired background color (in my case, navy)
- Scissors
STEP ONE | Spray paint your flat wood piece and let it dry thoroughly. I found a random piece of wood art at the thrift store that was exactly the size I was looking for.
STEP TWO | Give the stones a good cleaning to remove any dirt and debris. Then, give them a few coats of the copper spray paint and let dry.
STEP THREE | Cut a few pieces of Scotch® Brand Permanent Mounting Tape to fit the flat side of each stone. Remove one side of the backing and press firmly to adhere to the stone.
STEP FOUR | Remove the other side of the backing and adhere the stones to the wood board by pressing firmly for 30 seconds. The mounting tape lets the stone sit higher off the wood board so that the ties can hang easily.
STEP FIVE | My board was pretty lightweight, so I used four Command™ Strips to hang the tie rack on the wall damage-free. If yours is on the more heavy side, I would recommend using Command™ Picture Hanging strips. I used them for my gallery wall and they are so easy to use and hold very strongly.
A tie rack could be what you would call a “stereotypical” father’s day gift. I can guarantee the Dad in your life won’t expect a tie rack like this. It’s manly, unique, AND useful 😉
