Mini Home Tour: Peacock Blue Thrifted Entryway Decor Makeover

Setting the tone for your home begins in the entryway. My entryway was saying, “Oh, hi. We’re boring.”

When we bought our house, I knew the endless gray was going to get to me at some point. Don’t get me wrong, I love our house and practically everything about it. Just not the endless gray. All gray carpets, all gray walls. Luckily that’s a pretty easy fix.

Picking out a paint color: Sherwin Williams Peacock Blue

I’ve been wanting to dip my toes into the moody walls movement for a few years now. I thought to myself, what better time than while giving my entryway a complete overhaul?

Why not paint the walls a color that the guy at Sherwin Williams told me “never in all his years had a customer request”? But by the end of it, he was thinking about painting a car he was restoring the exact same color. Turns out I might actually have good taste 😉

The painting itself was far more work than I anticipated. I’ve never done such a deep color before and had no idea it would actually take 4 coats of paint to get full coverage. I’m not sure if that’s normal or if I’m just a perfectionist (or I’m terrible at painting).

Once the walls were all prettied up, it was time to do some thrifting for decor. Thanks to a very special organizing book, that I’ll get into below, I had a plan in action while I was thrifting.

Thrifting for Entryway Decor and Accessories

I had a few items on my list to make the entryway more functional:

  • a mirror for quick touch ups
  • a shelf with hooks
  • hidden storage for dog stuff
  • a place for mail

I already had a mirror at home that I had thrifted many moons ago. It got the same treatment almost everything did in my old home (a coat of black spray paint) but that wasn’t going to fit with the dark walls. After a little bit of liquid gold leaf dry brushing, now it pops against the wall color.

I found a white shelf for $2.99 with hooks perfect for hanging hats, scarves, etc. The basket was .99 and a perfect spot for dropping mail.

The storage stool was a $4.99 thrift find from a few years ago that I had waiting in my garage. After removing not one but TWO layers of do-it-yourself ugly upholstery I got to the original layer. A few coats of white spray paint later and I’m happy with the look. It’s the perfect spot for storing dog leashes/etc and magazines.

I thrifted a few random pieces of decor and accessories to add to the shelf. Each of the items (including the adorable vintage clock) was just $1.99!

Decluttering the Entryway Closet

I took my organization and decluttering cues from The Real Simple Method to Organizing Every Room. I’ve read “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, and it honestly was just a little too cut-throat for my liking. I can’t imagine trashing sentimental things like photos just because they’re taking up space.

What I like about this book is it not only gives advice for practical decluttering and organizing, it also gives great advice on how to make every space in your home more functional. But don’t just take my word for it…
