It never ceases to amaze me, there is always an abundance of random wooden objects found at the thrift store. Where does it all come from? Surely we will run out of grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles cleaning out their basements eventually. Right?

For now, I will enjoy the thrill of re-imagining found wooden thrift store objects. Like this gem…

I’m not sure if it was an appetizer tray, or what exactly it was. But when I saw it, an idea instantly popped into my head for what it’s second life would be: a jewelry tray/organizer! My necklaces are constantly tangling and my earrings are always losing their mates in my little ceramic bowl I currently use.

I used my new favorite paint for DIY projects in this pretty aqua blue that makes transforming thrifted objects super easy. It’s pretty much winter now in Minnesota, so spray paint is kind of out of the question. With this paint, I can use it indoors without fuming out the entire house.

STEP ONE
Clean off your thrifted piece with soap and water. Make sure you clean it thoroughly as thrift store goods can be pretty full of dust and dirt. Let it dry.

STEP TWO
Paint the inside of the tray with copper paint. Don’t worry about it getting on the edges, you’ll be painting those later. Let it dry completely.

STEP THREE
Using a paint brush, paint the outside and edges of the tray. I used a foam brush for the outside and a smaller paint brush for the top. Apply in thin, even coats. This paint dries nice and smooth with a high-gloss sheen. The finish is almost lacquer-like and super durable, I love it!

STEP FOUR
Fill it with your favorite jewelry. This tray was perfect because it’s got a separate spot for earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces.
