Easy Fake Hand Lettered St Patrick’s Day Sign with Glass Paint Markers

Don’t know how to do hand lettering? No problem! This tutorial uses new DecoArt Glass Paint Markers and teaches you how to get a hand lettered look so easy while you make a St. Patrick’s Day sign!

This fake handlettering St Patrick’s Day Sign tutorial has been sponsored by DecoArt, all opinions are my own.

I’ve always been one with nice hand writing.

But for the life of me, I can’t seem to grasp the technique of hand lettering.

It’s either that, or I’ve got about a million other crafty things going on and just can’t dedicate myself to the time and practice it takes to learn.

You get it, right?

So when I finally cleaned out my craft room/office and found this floating frame that I bought on clearance a million years ago, I knew JUST want I wanted to do with it.

If you think you could never master hand lettering, then this tutorial is for you!

All it takes is a glass float frame and some high quality paint markers made especially for writing on glass like these new DecoArt Glass Paint Markers.

Materials you’ll need…

  • New DecoArt Glass Markers in green, black, and gold metallic
  • 11″ x 14″ glass float frame
  • Gold spray paint
  • 8.5″ x 11″ sheet white card stock
  • Printer paper + ink
  • Glass cleaner
  • Tape

Tools you’ll need…

  • Printer
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

Step 1: Prepare your frame

My float frame had a silver color, so I gave it a coat of gold spray paint to fit the St Patrick’s Day theme I was going for.

Step 2: Print and apply your design to the float frame

Download my free “Let the SHENANIGANS begin!” printable and print it onto standard printer paper. Trim along the edges leaving a little bit of excess.

Tape the design to the back side of the pane of glass for your frame. Use a ruler to make sure it is centered.

Step 3: Trace the design onto the glass pane with the glass paint markers

First, you’ll need to activate the DecoArt Glass Paint Markers…

  1. Shake the marker well
  2. Press down the tip on a sheet of scratch paper until the color appears

Once the markers are good to go and the design is attached, flip the glass over and use the DecoArt Glass Paint Markers on the front side of the pane to trace the designs.

Tip: If you make a mistake, use a cotton swab with some water to wipe away the paint before it dries.

I did this a few times on the smaller letters.

Let the paint air cure for at least 8 hours.

If you are using the paints on a surface that will need to be washed/dried, you will also need to bake at 375 for 40 minutes in non-preheated oven. Then, allow to cool with the oven door open.

Because I was using the paint markers on a picture frame, I knew that letting them air cure for more than 8 hours would be enough.

Once your design is fully cured, clean away any finger prints with glass cleaner.

Step 4: Reassemble the float frame

Take a piece of standard 8 x 11.5″ sheet of white card stock and apply it to the other pane of glass for your frame. You can tape it in place with some scotch tape.

Then, re-assemble your frame with the glass pane first, second pane with the card stock second, and then the frame support last.

Depending on the frame you use, your frame might go together slightly differently, but the steps are essentially the same.

These paint markers were literally so easy to use on the glass. I thought they might be a little see-through or slippery to apply but that was totally not the case.

If you are wondering what is the best kind of marker to use on glass, these are it!

Just one pass through and that’s all it took to get a smooth, satin finish. Plus I love how vivid the green is, it’s gorgeous!
