As we soaked in all the craziness of drop-off on the first day of school, I noticed something.

There were quite a few kids bringing first day of school gifts to their new teachers.

Is this a new tradition I had no idea about?

Is my kid now doomed because she didnโ€™t bribe her teacher right off the bat?!

Iโ€™m kidding.

Kind of.

Personally, I think teacher appreciation gifts are the most appreciated when theyโ€™re unexpected. Or at least thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m telling myself so I donโ€™t feel like I started the year off with a mom fail.

So instead of stressing about the perfect first day of school gift, Iโ€™m sending Bean to school with one of these free If You Give A Teacher A Cookie printable gift tags on a random Monday when her teacher least expects it.

This easy teacher gift is inspired by the classic If You Give a Mouse a Cookie book, which gives it that sweet, nostalgic classroom feel without making it complicated. Just print the tag, tie it onto a mason jar, fill the jar with cookies, and you have a cute teacher appreciation gift that feels thoughtful but takes about 10 minutes to put together.

It works for back to school, Teacher Appreciation Week, Christmas, end-of-year thank you gifts, or any random day when you want to send a little extra kindness to school.

And because there are four tags per page, itโ€™s also perfect if your child has multiple teachers, aides, coaches, or school staff members you want to thank.

Now without further adoโ€ฆ

Step 1: Print the If You Give A Teacher A Cookie Gift Tag

Print out your tag using my “If you give a teacher a cookie…” free printable on white cardstock.

Cut the tag out with scissors and punch a hole in the top.

Tips for Printing the Gift Tags

For the nicest-looking tag, I recommend printing the If You Give A Teacher A Cookie printable on white card stock instead of regular printer paper.

A few quick tips:

  • Use card stock so the tag feels sturdy.
  • Print at full size so the design does not shrink.
  • Cut just inside the lines for a cleaner edge.
  • Use a small hole punch near the top of the tag.
  • Tie it on with bakerโ€™s twine, ribbon, or yarn.

Regular printer paper will still work, but card stock makes the finished teacher gift feel a little more special.

Step 2: Tie the Printable Tag Onto the Mason Jar

Attach the tag to the jar with some cute baker’s twine. I cut out approximately one yard so that I could wrap it around the jar a few times.

Step 3: Fill the Jar With Cookies

Fill the jar with your favorite delicious cookies, seal the jar by twisting on the lid, and you’re done!

What Cookies Should I Put in the Jar?

You can use just about any cookies for this teacher gift, but smaller cookies are usually easiest to fit inside a mason jar.

A few easy ideas:

  • homemade chocolate chip cookies
  • mini chocolate chip cookies
  • bakery cookies
  • wrapped cookies
  • sugar cookies
  • oatmeal cookies
  • cookie mix layered in the jar
  • gluten-free cookies, if you know the teacherโ€™s preference

If youโ€™re sending this gift to school with your child, wrapped cookies or smaller cookies may be the easiest option. If youโ€™re hand-delivering it, homemade cookies make it feel extra sweet.

As you might be able to predict, this is a take on the classic book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie…”.  And you know how that sentence ends… they’re gonna want a glass of milk!

We’re big on milk in our family (I even wrote a blog post in my early days of blogging confessing my love of milk, no lie).

We had a few leftover cookies from our teacher gifts that we couldn’t help but dip in some ice cold milk that I picked up during my last grocery store run ๐Ÿ˜‰
