Kid’s “Hilda” Halloween Costume: a DIY Guide

You can easily put together your own Hilda (from the Netflix series) costume for your kids. Here’s how!

Our family has been obsessed with Hilda since it’s release in September 2018, so when Brynn decided (after a few “subtle” hints from Mom & Dad) that’s who she wanted to be for Halloween we were both over the moon excited!

My goal, as it is for most of Brynn’s Halloween costumes, was to thrift the majority of the pieces. Whatever I couldn’t thrift, I would make.

If your kiddo is also thinking about being Hilda for Halloween this year, here is how you can follow in my footsteps to put together your own Hilda costume.

Because when your kid wants to dress up like an obscure character, you probably have no other choice than to DIY 😉

This is a perfect tutorial for how you can DIY a girls Hilda Halloween costume with thrift store items!

Hilda’s Accessories

Hilda has quite a few defining accessories that you just can’t skip:

Black Beret

We (I) was determined to find a black beret at a thrift store. After all, I see them ALL THE TIME when I’m out thrifting.

Lucky me, we found one immediately during our thrift trip to complete Brynn’s Halloween costume. And it was just $2.99!

You can also get a kid’s black beret pretty cheap from Amazon.

Yellow Scarf

I never ended up finding a yellow scarf at the thrift store. But luckily, a remnant piece of yellow fleece from JoAnn’s with some creative cutting ended up looking just like a scarf. Pretty sure this scarf cost me about 2 bucks total.

You could also order this yellow scarf off Amazon for $6.99.

Red Boots

I knew finding a pair of red boots in Brynn’s size would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

So I looked for a pair of winter boots in Brynn’s size from the thrift store that I wouldn’t care about hot gluing fabric to. I scored some for just $4!

When I was searching for yellow fleece to make the scarf, I also found a remnant piece of red fleece that was the perfect size to cover 2 boots. After a few creative cuts and numerous finger burns from the hot glue, we had Hilda’s red boots.

If you’re not willing to sacrifice the hot glue burns, you can just order this pair of red boots like these off Amazon.

Hilda’s Outfit

Blue Skirt

I could not find a blue skirt in Brynn’s size, or a blue skirt in any size for that matter, at the thrift store.

What I did find was a jean skirt. And because I knew fabric paint existed, I picked some up in a turquoise color.

I also did some searching on Amazon and was not able to find a skirt in the right shade of blue. I really think DIY is the way to go with this piece.

Black Leggings

Luckily, as most girls, Brynn already had quite the collection of black leggings. These also helped keep her nice and warm on a typical chilly Minnesota Halloween night!

If you live in a warmer climate, black tights would also be a great option.

Red Long Sleeve Shirt

I struck gold again at the thrift store and found a red long sleeve shirt in the boy’s section during a 50% off kids sale. I paid about $2 for the shirt Brynn’s wearing, which is actually thicker like a sweater.

You could also order this long sleeve red shirt off Amazon.

Hilda’s Look

Baby Blue Hair

You can’t be Hilda without her iconic baby blue hair.

I found a cheap wig at Walmart for $7.99, but it was SUPER long. With my hair stylist skills, I gave it a little haircut so it could fit Brynn better. There’s not much you can do about a cheap $8 synthetic wig, but I thought it looked adorable on Brynn 🙂

If you can’t find one at your local stores, here is a baby blue wig for kids that is already cut and ready to go on Amazon!

Twig

Twig is Hilda’s adorable pet deerfox. Being the DIYer that I am, and even though I had never done it before, I decided I could make Brynn a stuffed Twig.

I found a free pattern online, increased the size so it was closer to Twig’s actual size, and sewed until I was choking on white fuzzy fabric floating around my craft room 😉

It was a labor of love, but she is still in love with Twig. So I call that a win.

If you don’t have the patience to sew Twig yourself, here is an absolutely ADORABLE handmade Twig from Amazon Handmade.

We are all so happy to hear that Hilda has been confirmed for a Season 2, but unfortunately we will have to wait until sometime in 2020 🙁

In the meantime, our family will be re-watching (and re-re-watching) old episodes…

The year Brynn was Hilda, we started a Halloween tradition at our house with her cousins a few years ago and it’s been so fun.

We order Pizza Man (if you don’t have Pizza Man in your area, I am so sorry, you’re missing out), have cupcakes, and then dominate the streets begging for candy.

It was such a fun night, and we’re looking forward to repeating the tradition this Halloween 🙂

Putting together a Hilda costume for your kids is easier than you think!

I would love to see if you put together your own Hilda costume this Halloween. Share them in the comments below!
